HPTO Meeting Agenda

1. Welcome (Dr. Grandt)
   1. Attendance: Genna Robinson, Andrea Schmaling, Michelle Spence, Deborah Spence, Rachel Krause, Mary Wesmess, Erin Stacey, Amanda Steurer, Crystal Torres, Nicki Rasmussen, Allisen Cullum, Jessica Grandt, Jennifer Babcock. 
   2. Principal Update (Jessica)  
   3. Great start to the school year! Huge thanks to the PTO for all of your help at Meet and Greets, including the free t-shirts for all of the students and the snacks for staff. 
   4. Picture day is already next Wednesday September 24th. Information for ordering both the pictures and the yearbook is on FB and in Dojo. Stacy Jersild will be helping out with picture day.
   5. This Wednesday, September 17th is the deadline to turn in donation money to get a free t-shirt! 
   6. NOTICE****Dr. Grandt announced  that Sarah Smith, HPTO President, will be stepping down in her role for personal reasons. Sarah will remain a HPTO member but will no longer serve on the Executive Board.  We thank Sarah for her work as the President and for all of the wonderful things she has done for our school. Per the PTO by-laws, the executive board will meet to discuss and vote to fill the opening for the remainder of the year. This meeting will take place at least 48 hours following this notice.
2. Teacher Updates
   1. Primary:
      1. Kindergarten:
         1. Thank you, PTO, for the snacks that were provided during the meet and greets.
         2. Kindergarten has started its new science curriculum, learning about cold/warm temperatures.
         3. For math, they are practicing ten frames.
         4. In reading, they have started using book bins and practicing more independent reading.
      2. 1st grade:
         1. For science, they are learning about light and sound.
         2. In math, they are working on double ten frames, adding to 20.
         3. In reading, they started their second week in Wonders and took their first progress monitor last week.
         4. They are also learning about our city and country.
   2. Intermediate:   
      1. 2nd Grade:
         1. Wonders focusing on characters, setting, and plot.
         2. Math- addition/subtraction within 20 using number racks.
         3. New Science-learning about earth exploration.  Really enjoying the more hands-on/exploration approach.
         4. Social Studies-learning about how families learn about their past.
      2. 3rd grade:
         1. READING: Beginning next text set working on Author's purpose and Character's Perspective
         2. MATH: addition/subtraction, getting a refresh on strategies
         3. SCIENCE: Pinball Machines: Understanding what force is and how to apply force
         4. SOCIAL STUDIES: Diversity in the USA: what makes our country so diverse?
   3. Upper Unit:  
      1. 4th grade:  
         1. Math- We are working on multiplication strategies in class and review skills in WIN.
         2. Social Studies- We are exploring the Four Social Sciences and then will shift our focus to geography.
         3. Writing- We are learning and practicing the steps to traffic light writing.
         4. Reading- We are reading expository text and focusing on compare and contrast and diagrams and headings. 
         5. Science- We have started an extensive study on Tsumamis with a focus on how to help people prepare.
      2. 5th Grade:
         1. ELA: Focus on the narrative non-fiction genre.  Main standards are cause and effect and homographs.  1st story involves the true story of John Muir and President Roosevelt at Yosemite National Park and the importance of conservation, so our first writing activity will be researching a National Park.
         2. Math: Main focuses are volume, order of operations, and multiplication strategies
         3. Science- Just started new curriculum "My Sci".  Our first unit involves Pizza Farms as a way to introduce plants and how living things get and process their food.  We are sprouting mung beans and lentils and had an experiment using yeast with sugar in a bottle and another bottle without sugar to see how much carbon dioxide was released.  
         4. Social Studies:  Events leading up to the American Revolution-all of the main conflicts, acts implemented, Loyalists vs. Patriots.
3. Treasurer’s Report (Allisen)
   1. 2025-2026 Budget Review and Approval Needed
      1. Budget Approved. Motion first by Jennifer Babcock and motioned second by Jessica Grandt. All others were in favor.  
   2. Cross Country Jersey Invoice - Javad 
      1.  Executive board voted as this needed to be decided on prior to school starting due to timing of first meet. 
   3. A new line added into Student Activities for Prior Year Field Trips. 
      1. These are field trips the school is waiting on the district to send invoices to us for.  Currently we owe $3501.00. 
      2. It was also mentioned that all grades receive 3 field trips per school year.
      3.   Dr. Grandt mentioned that 1 more teacher was added to account for that addition.    
      4. Currently over budget by $8023.00 however this will end up leaving us with roughly over 
   4. $5000.00 in bank which is ideal.

   2. Updates
      1. Erin could use 2 more volunteers for Food Sales and 2 more for Floaters. Jessica has 2 greeters she may be able to have help elsewhere if needed. Erin will look into having Marissa post something on Dojo to ask for more volunteers/attach a link to HPTO Facebook page to sign up. 
      2. DJ Jason is NOT able to DJ Color Run. Allisen was able to get a hold of her neighbor, Jon Gordon who owns a DJ Company. He’ll have his DJ named Chris come out to help us for $50.00. Allisen has booked this. Allisen will also confirm that they’ll have a microphone and see if they have disco ball/lights.  (Mentioned that Erin will look on Amazon to purchase schools' own disco ball, lights/fun accessories we can use for multiple events like game night, bingo, glow night. Erin will email to the executive board what she finds). 
      3. Need Juice Donation yet! Erin will post on HPTO Facebook page asking if anyone would be willing or has a connection to get juice boxes donated again this year. Water is taken care of  
      4. Porta Potty - can no longer get a donated porta potty from Lon Jon’s. Discounted cost is $135.00.  Agreed to just go with Lon Jons and pay.  Allisen will call to book. Delivery is happening on 9/24 and will be picked up on 9/26.
      5. 50/50 will be announced at 6:15 SHARP. Color Run will take place right afterwards.  
      6. Jennifer Babcock will disburse color into 6 buckets (6 Stations) in the evening of Tuesday September 23rd.  
   3. Coin Wars
      1. Erin has volunteers set for each day. Hours will be 10:45am-12:15pm.
      2. Mrs. Astin take daily for count and Dr. Grandt will make daily announcements
      3. Class prize will be given for Coin Wars this year, and class that raises the most $ will win a pizza party.
         1. No class prize this year for most adult donations.
         2. Families have the opportunity to get a free t-shirt for their child and have them tie-dye it based on their donations
   4. Spirit Days  
      1. Monday: Crazy from head to toe!  Wear everything from your wildest hats to your zanniest socks! 
      2. Tuesday:  Tacky tourist tie-dye. Wear your silliest tourist attire along with tie-dye! 
      3. Wednesday:  Dress to Impress!  School Picture Day! 
      4. Thursday: Color Blast! (Kindergarten - wear red; 1st grade - wear orange; 2nd grade - wear yellow; 3rd grade - wear blue; 4th grade - wear purple; 5th grade - wear pink)
      5. Friday:  Harrison Spirit Day! Celebrate your Harrison spirit and wear all your green and white!
   5. Assemblies
      1. Animals - October 3rd $475 for 3-1 hour sessions
         1. Need a check ready that day.  Allisen can have a check that morning for presenter (Kim) or Paypal her. 
         2. Need 4-5 parent volunteers to help - set up starts at 8:15, clean up should be done by 1:30 w/ a 15 minute break between sessions and 30 minutes for lunch - Volunteers will be running a station and handling the animals - Ms. Sarauer would prefer the same volunteers the whole time. 
            1. Marissa needs volunteer names by October 2nd.
   6. Erin will send out a message looking for volunteers. Possibly email Marissa to post something on Dojo to fill volunteer spots or announce that volunteers are needed and attach link to HPTO Facebook Page to sign up. 
   7. UWW Wheelchair Basketball $750/1-hour.  Will be discussed later as this will happen in the Spring. 
5. Upcoming Events:
   1. Trunk or Treat - October 30th
   2. Erin will email Marissa to post something to Dojo. Either a volunteer list sign up or link to HPTO Facebook page. 
   3. Discussed updating the map so families/kids cannot go back to the beginning once they reach the end of the line. Prefer that families keep going around to the front of the school.  Possibly have yard games set up in the front or having a dance party out front or end of line.  Mrs. Tourdot is chair person for event, Erin will discuss with her.

Wetland Sign - Updates

Approval made to have Donna (Summer Custodian) go forward with creating a new sign.  Dr. Grandt will email Donna requesting a list of material needed for this upgrade and if she prefers to purchase and be reimbursed or have HPTO purchase directly for her.  Dr. Grandt will let executive board know. This will be completed over the colder months. 

 

6. New Business

Popcorn Fridays will be changing to Popcorn Wednesdays.  Mary Westness and Deborah Spence will go in one Wednesday per month together to pop the popcorn and package it.  Goes right along with our Harrison spirit days on Wendesdays! Teachers will hand out to students at the end of day. 

• The first Popcorn Day will be Wednesday:  October 8th. 

 

7. Questions or Concerns  

• Can Principal Message me posted in dojo? Dr. Grandt will look into this.  A lot of parents are now registered with Dojo.

NOTICE: The Executive Board will meet via Google Meet, on Friday September 19th at 5:15pm to discuss and vote on how to fill the current opening for President and also to discuss any subsequent openings within the officer positions that could potentially result due to restructuring caused by the vacancy. Results will be shared at the next regularly scheduled PTO meeting.

1. Welcome (Erin) 
   1. Introductions/ Attendance:

2. Principal Update (Jessica)  

• 2025 Fall Color Run was a tremendous success with over 500 people in attendance, great sponsors and the fundraising goal was met.  
• Harrison staff is geared up for Parent Teacher Conferences this week and hosting the Scholastic Book Fair for parents and students to attend.  
• PTO was thanked for providing boxed meals for Wednesday night.  
• Finally, the district parent survey was sent out and everyone is encouraged to participate.  Laptops will also be available in the library for people attending conferences or the book fair to complete the survey. 

3. Teacher Updates
   1. Primary Unit: 

K: Math: we are working on 10 frames, tally marks, and 2D shapes

Reading: we are in unit 2 and working on concepts of print

Science: Unit Playground Cooldown studying extreme weather and weather patterns

1st: Math: Adding to 20

Science: Learning how to make sounds for a puppet play

Writing: Narrative writing

2. Intermediate Unit: 

2nd: Math-we are having fun measuring beans and gardens that go along with the story Jack and the Beanstalk

-Reading-we are working on expository texts and are learning about how offspring depend on their parents.  We are working on the central idea & details.

-Science-we are learning about early explorers and where/how they lived.

-Writing-we are finishing up our realistic fiction stories.

 

3rd: Math- multiplication working on arrays and counting up stamp costs.

-Reading starting Unit 2 on expository texts with comprehension and authors claim.

-Science -continuing pinball machines and the forces of magnets

-Writing -adding details and revising personal narratives.

 

3. Upper Unit:  

4th: Math- we are continuing our work on using a variety of strategies for multiplication; focusing on fact, fluency

Reading- working on finding central idea and supporting details using expository text

Writing- finished up a two week study of grammar and have moved back into writing organized paragraphs using a stoplight strategy

Social studies- wrapping up our geography unit and moving into a month-long study of Wisconsin history

Science- continuing our study of what makes tsunami happen, learning about waves, and trying to figure out how to protect people against tsunami

We went on our first field trip to JSOL and had an amazing time and learned lots

The Delta Kappa Gamma writing contest was just offered to students, we had our second class store as a reward for white and green tickets earned, and both classes have earned their first feather party! 

 

5th: Math- adding and subtracting fractions, finding common denominators, fact fluency, finding a fraction of a whole number(multiplying) We just finished our River Trail or Spooky Trail which focuses on this skill

ELA-Starting unit 2, our text this week ties in with our Social Studies curriculum, just finished up researching a National Park and presenting a slideshow with the information

Social Studies-Revolutionary War and Declaration of Independence-just created a timeline of events leading up the War, and now focusing on events during the war

Science-Plants.  Just finished an experiment growing bean seeds with different variables.  Found that plants can survive without soil and explored hydroponics

Both classes just earned their 1st Feather Party of the year

 

4. Treasurer’s Report (Allisen)

   iii.Any further needs: Review of donations and additional needs to happen Monday 10.27.25.

 

3. Restaurant Nights: (Volunteer Needs/Posting on Dojo/Flyer going home/Facebook Page Post??)

   i.Qdoba (Nov 19th) FB/Dojo Flyers need to be sent out.  Qdoba requires students/families to say upon order for Harrison Fundraiser. Volunteers may still be required. Allisen usually helps with this.

   ii.Noodles (Dec 17th) No discussion 

 

4. Family Game Night (Nov 14th)

   i.Volunteers: Erin Stacey to hand over to Mary Westness for main support

   ii.Snacks?: No snacks needed but looking for game donations and potentially having  PTO purchase new games.  Ideas for games for PTO to purchase: Tapple, Spot It, and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza are popular right now.

iii. Raffle: Idea to Raffle off Mac’s Pizza certificates or gift cards to attendees for a prize raffle as an incentive to participate.

 

5. Movie Night (Dec 12th)

   i.Volunteers: Debbie Spence, Michelle Spence, Mary Westness

   ii.Snacks: Popcorn (popped during the day) or Christmas Cookie

   iii.What Movie?: Prep & Landing to be played.  License option confirmed by Mary Westness.

iv.  Craft: Decision to only show one short film and do an ornament decorating craft project also. Either to complete there or take home for completion. Mary will look for ideas to be discussed at November meeting.

 

6. Color Blast Run Recap: 

   i.How’d Potato Sack Race and Slimming of Dr. Grandt go? Kids loved both.  Madison school lent us the sliming apparatus.  Thank you note to be sent for Stephanie Filter Madison Principal.  PTO thanked for set-up and slime help.

   ii.Ideas for next year: Requested slime change and further options to be reviewed later.  Question on food truck and reliability was discussed. 

Iii. Sponsor thank-you notes to be issued by Erin Stacey.

8. Hawks Night Out: Adults-Only Spring Fundraiser (Feb 6th) 

   i.Planning Committee (Needs to be formed): Committee established Allisen Cullum, Jen Babcock, Mary Westness, Michelle and Debbie Spence.  Jen Babcock to follow up with Rachel (prior year member) for participation.

   ii.School Department Application on who earns the money raised?:  Erin Stacey to send Dr. Grandt application for department fundraising.  Application due for review and final department determination at November meeting.

Iii. Party Details: New time suggested. 6pm-9pm or 5:30pm-8:30pm.  Erin Stacey to confirm with Sidelines on venue, date and time. Confirm that Allisen will take over auction Zeffy platform for fundraiser.

 

6. Wetland Sign Update: Donna is designing and updating sign and will buy all applicable materials needed and submit receipts for reimbursement. Sign to be completed this winter and installed in the spring.

 

7. Playground Update: 

1. Basketball Hoops (Nets/Painting?) Work order created for basketball hoops and waiting on the Maintenance Department for actioning. No known timeframe.
2. Nine Square in the Air/Catherine Kolb sent a new idea to purchase - Quote received from Catherine Kolb but based on costs of purchase of structure and the cost to build a permanent installation - project has been tabled due to high costs.  Additional discussion available for potentially a portable option for gym use.

 

8. Geoff Mongiat/Would like to Sponsor something:

1. Ideas: Requested to update Wetlands sign - project currently in process.  Other ideas for sponsorship was the Christmas ornament craft, painting supplies for the garbage area and updating the Little Library. Jen Babcock to reach out to Geoff Mongiat via email. 

 

9.  JAC Meeting Nov 6th at 6pm at ESC

1. The JAC PTA is hosting an Update/Q&A with Superintendent Mark Holzman.  Any interested parties are welcome to attend! Upcoming meeting discussed and attendance welcomed on behalf of Allisen Cullum with You’re Invited flyers distributed to meeting attendees. 

 

10.  New Business (Erin)

i. Interest in guest speakers broached:  Dr. Grandt discussed Mrs. Tourdot and Mrs. Williams hosting a parent night in January to discuss the staff book study of The Anxious Generation. Also discussed was the Police Department and collaboration for a safety discussion or reaching out to Mr. Shevy on internet/device safety and security. 

ii. Teacher Spotlight discussed. Monthly spotlight and introduction to a Harrison teacher, questions submitted to Dr. Grandt for approval and staff distribution.  Marissa to release on Dojo/FB and PTO to utilize bulletin board in the hallway to post highlights.

iii. Next popcorn day is set for November 12th.

1. Welcome (Erin)
   1. Introductions & Attendance:

2. Principal Update (Erin)  
   1. Book Fair results - raised $1395 - money will be used for creating STEAM trolleys which are carts of STEAM materials that will be wheeled off to different pods when indoor recess is called. Mr Shevy hopes it will encourage collaboration and play together during recess even when indoors. He will also use the money for 3D printing filament. 3D prints are used for building and class rewards as well as student birthdays!
   2. School report card - awesome forward scores from last spring. District is meeting expectations. But Harrison is exceeding expectations per DPI. Woot, woot!

 

3. Teacher updates
   1. Primary Unit - 
      1. K: Is focusing on Wonders Reading Unit Test and Science Weather
      2. 1st - Is working on Adding and Subtracting Stories and Maps 
   2. Intermediate Unit- 
      1. 2nd &3rd - Reading we are wrapping up unit 2 and learning about fables.  We will take our end of the unit assessment the 2 days before Thanksgiving.  Math, we are learning about place value and addition strategies for double and triple digit numbers. Writing 2nd grade is doing research about animals they chose to learn more about.  We will use that research to write an essay. Science and social studies learning about communities and early explorers.  Students are having fun with many hands-on activities.
   3. Upper Unit 
      1. 4th - we are working on folktales- learning all about theme, personification, homographs, and plot. In writing we are applying that knowledge by creating our own folktales. In math we have recently started unit 3, this unit is all about decimals- saying them properly, adding and subtracting them, and converting them into fractions. In science we are learning about decomposition and social studies we are working on the three branches of government. 
      2. 5th - Reading - Wrapping up Wonders Unit 2 with an exploration of poetry and review for the unit assessment. Kids really enjoyed the readers' theater from week 3-4. Writing- continuing with our use of the Stoplight Writing technique to organize informational text. Currently working on a well developed paragraph about animal adaptations. Math- just wrapped up two units on multiplication and are starting with a unit on fractions. Social Studies- exploring Wisconsin geography and history. Science- We just started part 2 of our tsunami exploration and now are focusing on what sound is and how that knowledge could help us to potentially detect a tsunami
4. Treasurer’s Report (Allisen)
   1. Budget Review - 
      1. Budget copies handed out for review.
   2. Ongoing fundraiser update(s)
      1. Great Scoopie night totals. Color run funds are completed and posted. Ongoing fundraiser update(s) - Qdoba fundraiser is up next. Note -  that the QR code needs to be used when placing orders which may impact fundraising totals.
      2. Nikki brought up the idea of having a carwash fundraiser in the spring.  Erin/Allisen to look further into it.
5. PTO Check-in
   1. Event recap

• Trunk or Treat - 4th and best year yet! The count was 602 attendees. People liked the flow of the event and enjoyed the music and game area to hang out. Shout out to the teachers that participated and made it even better!
• Family Game Night -Good turnout.  Thirty seven kids signed in for the game night raffle. Need to think about the future and making sure someone can lock and unlock doors. (The nighttime custodian is supposed to do this.)  Might also want to expand with more tables or move to the gym.  The idea was brought up of doing something parents vs. students games/activities.  Would need more adults/volunteers to expand. Other feedback: Historically we have kept this as a “no tech” event as a way to encourage families to interact in a way that did not include a device. There was a game this year that involved the SMART panel that may have detracted from that purpose a bit. Discussion should be had about the vision for this event moving forward. 

2. Upcoming Event Needs

• Food drive - happening now! - It was noted that barely any classes have seen food donations.  Staff brought up that it would be good to have some type of flyer to send out to remind families.  Need a ½ page flyer to go home with students if possible Tuesday.  Also need to post to the FB site and bump or repost in Dojo as reminders.  Volunteers and echo drop off confirmed.
• Family Movie Night (Mary) -
  • Snack Update - Kwik trip cannot do Rice Krispies.  Looking into Sam’s Club to supply.  Jen to check on Woodman’s.
  • Craft Update - Wooden ornaments to be ordered approx. 50.  Mary sending the link to Allisen to order from Amazon.
  • Needs- Paint markers and regular markers to be supplied by Mary and Michelle.  Jen providing a Christmas table cloth that can also be colored.  Allisen handling the raffle prize.
• Holiday Staff Gift/treat - Wanting to do a treat for the teachers. Brought up either Sweet Daisy or Sugardust Bakehouse.  Nothing decided yet.
• Virtual Bingo - Prizes.  Allisen is going to look into additional prizes based on last year's items.  Nothing else needed.
• Parents Night Out  
  • Schedule committee meeting - First committee meeting to be held 12/1 at 6pm at sidelines. Planning FB group established, sending out last year’s donation tracking excel to the group.
  • Committee Confirmed - Rachel S., Erin, Allisen, Jennifer, Mary, Deb, Michelle, Rachel K.
  • Zeffy Auction Platform - Confirmed Allisen will take this on and run.
  • Erin confirmed the date and availability with Sidelines.  It was agreed to use the same food offering as last time.

6. Teacher Applications/Presentations for Recipient of PNO
   1. Kim Astin - 1st grade Steam - Lynn S walked through the needs for first grade and the reasoning behind the requests.  Application handed out for attendees.
   2. Brewer/Maresch - 2nd grade Steam - Allisen went through application requests and reasoning with the group. Application was handed out for attendees.
   3. Tourdot/Schultz - Proposed a Family Resource Center with a wish list for 5K in items, storage and other things to manage the center.  Proposal was to offer kids and families options for screen-free entertainment, learning etc., this aligns with the reading and discussion they have been working on with The Anxious Generation.
   4. Allisen also went through an application from Kassi Haas on storage needed for the art room.  It was noted that further conversations need to happen with Dr. Grandt. Application was also handed out to the group.
       
7. Assemblies/Guest Speakers/Other

• Date for Wheelchair Basketball? Any PTO volunteer needs? - Lynn confirmed everything was on track and she was not aware of needing volunteers but would reach out to Erin if that changed.
• Tourdot/Williams - January discussion of the Anxious Generation - Proposed doing a parent assembly and having Tourdot/Williams available to discuss and present.
• Internet Safety discussions - Erin contacted Shevy and he is working on doing something for his church so may not have availability. Erin is going to reach out to JPD for a parent night discussion on internet safety.  It was brought up that Marshall just had a similar program run.
• JAC PTA meeting recap - Allisen did a recap on the meeting.  Highlighting the upcoming April or May banquet and annual awards that are given out and to people nominated.  She also stated the calendar for the next few school years was released and dates of school start times and end times should be noted.

• Geoff Mongiat sponsorship project - Jen to ask Geoff if he is interested in doing the Little Library.  Megan Schultz who has 4 of her own Little Library’s she sponsors has someone that can build a new one. It was brought up that we would like to update it and maybe even add a bench to it.

      1. Kindergarten: Finishing up measurements and moving on to coins and counting.  Completing the Unit 3 assessment as well.
      2. 1st Grade: Is moving into Farm to Table in reading and have their unit 3 assessments happening.
   2. Intermediate Unit:
      1. 2nd: Reading unit 3 learning about the sky through both fiction and nonfiction text. Math Measuring using inches, feet and yards. Writing personal narratives about a time they helped someone.  Social studies/Science they are learning about communities and using maps.
      2. 3rd: Literacy they are using folklore to talk about character perspectives.  Math telling time to the nearest minute and comparing mass and volume. Writing  they are finishing up personal narratives.  Social studies finding the Americas. Okaokay perScience getting ready to start Guardians of the Gardens.
   3. Upper Unit:
      1. 4th: Expository w/ Scientifically altered food. Math is addition and subtraction. Writing narrative lessons. Science final project on scratch. Social science early settlers.

   1. Financial Review 
      1. $153 QDoba fundraiser. Noodles & Co over $200 but final payment not in yet. Also received $128 from box tops.  $2000 available funds, 500 for school improvements, $500 for landscaping and $1000 for classroom supplies. Working on clearing open field trip expenses with the district. Upcoming Papa Murphy fundraiser coming up next Wednesday the 21st 4-7pm, with 15% of all sales going to PTO.
      2. Dr. Grandt reached out to Lorenzo Torres and he is willing/able to help with the landscaping again this year. He will turn in receipts to PTO upon completion. 
   2. Reallocate teacher grant remainder
      1. Teacher reimbursement reallocation will have about probably 850 to 875 to reallocate - we spent just over 1500 dollars then with 16 staff members which is in keeping with previous years.

   1. Primary Unit:
      1. Kindergarten: Kinder for math is working on 2D and 3D shapes and sorting based on attributes, also counting by 10's, 5's, and 2's. Reading we just started Unit 6, and science we are in our Make It Go unit and are learning about force, push, pull, and motion.
      2. 1st: Math: 2D and 3D shapes

Science:  NEW unit called, "Tiny Flyers"  the study of birds

2. Intermediate Unit:
   1. 2nd: Reading - We just started unit 4 in wonders

2nd grade would also like to give PTO a huge thank you for our new STEAM buckets! The kids absolutely LOVE them!

2. 3rd: Reading- finishing up U4W3&4. & have been working on a project called teach the teacher. This went along with our essential question of: How can you use what you know to help others? Math- just started talking about division and fact families . Working on creating story problems. Science- just planted our beet plants that we will be doing a frost experiment with soon once they grow! 

Social studies- economy project: they are creating a business. They will sell goods/services. They will learn how to write a check and balance it & the markets will be next week!

3. Upper Unit:
   1. 4th: Math- started geometry unit. Writing- doing a narrative of a figure from black history from a first-person perspective. Social Studies-exploring the differences between the different regions of the 13 colonies. Science- looking at dams and natural resources, and how energy is used. Reading- looking at historical fiction with a focus on both cause and effect and description as text structures that authors use. Additional learning opportunities: after learning about the original serum run of 1925 that the Iditarod commemorates, students will each select a musher to follow throughout the Iditarod race and map their course to see how they do in the race.
   2. 5th: Math-Working on Unit 5-multiplying a fraction by a whole number and fractions, time fractions, also with word problems.  We also continue to practice in order to master the standard multiplication algorithm. ELA- This week's genre is drama, so we are reading a few different dramas, and each small group will perform a Reader's Theater. Students are also practicing how to respond to a prompt and craft a well-written paragraph.  We continue to work on fluency as well. Science- We started a new unit called Particle Picnic, which focuses on the types and properties of matter, as well as what are physical and chemical changes. Social Studies-We continue our study of Westward Expansion by examining how Wisconsin went from Native American tribal lands to a territory and then a state. Students also researched one president and created a poster to show their new learning.  5th graders also celebrated their 1,000th day of school last week with a few fun activities.

   1. Financial Review - $250.95 came in from Noodles fundraiser.  Paid all field trips up to date with the district. Paid for JPAC field trip.
      1. Motion: Allisen moved to approve leftover funds ($866.98) from the teacher reimbursement line item to the Spring Fundraiser Total ($3878.18)

3. Teacher updates
   1. Primary Unit: 
      1. Kindergarten - In reading, finishing up unit 8 and assessing this week.  Math focus is on subtraction and ones and tens place value.  In science the students made a galimoto and are starting a plant unit.
      2. First Grade - In reading they just started the final unit. In math starting unit seven focusing on place value. In science wrapping up our unit of tiny fliers (hummingbird). 
          
4. Intermediate Unit:
   1. Second Grade - Reading group finished unit 4.  In math they wrapped unit 7.  The second graders are excited about the field trip to JPAC and JSOL coming up in may.  They are also working hard on their Spring Sing.
   2. Third Grade - In reading completed unit 5 test on cause and effect and are starting unit 6 on main idea.  In writing they are editing and typing opinion paragraphs on self-driving cars. In math working on shapes.  Names of quadrilaterals, their attributes, area and perimeter.  In science a unit of frost and how it affects plants. In social studies they just took a unit test on the fur trade.
       
5. Upper Unit:
   1. Fourth Grade -  Reading: We are starting Week 2 of Unit 5 - focusing on Similes/Metaphors, Foreshadowing, Conflict, and Character Development. Writing: Working through Unit 5 grammar with a focus on Adjectives. Math: Finishing up Unit 6 this week with our test on Friday - this was focused on division and multiplication. Social Studies: We're working on Wisconsin Industries - Logging, Mining, and Agriculture.Science: We are starting the next lesson in Unit 18 - investigating the impact dams have on their environment. Field Trip next month: Track Meet and a trip to the Hydroplant and Milton House.
   2. Fifth Grade - We just finished Forward Testing last week. Reading: We are starting Week 5 of Unit 5 - Focus is on argumentative text, authors' perspective, root words, text features, vocabulary and puns. Writing: Working on responding to prompts with a well written paragraph, comparative and superlative adjectives is our grammar focus. Math: Finishing up Unit 6 this week with our test on Friday.  Unit 6 focuses on coordinate graphing, volume, and identifying and classifying polygons. Social Studies: We're working on our financial literacy unit as we prepare for our field trip to Biztown next month.  Students are learning about banks and financial institutions, saving and spending, as well as the rights and responsibilities of citizens so far. Science: Students are working in Unit 24-structure and properties of matter and chemical reactions. Field Trip  on Wednesday to the Sky Carp Game in Beloit for -Baseball and Education Days.

   1. Huge thank you to PTO for Teacher Appreciation Week.  The staff enjoyed all the wonderful treats and enjoyed the theme. 
3. Teacher updates
   1. Primary Unit: 
      • Kindergarten In Wonders, they just finished unit 9. In Bridges, they are working on tens and ones place value, addition and subtraction within 10. Kindergarten is starting an animal research project.
      • First Grade In Wonders, students will be finishing the last unit for the year with the assessment on Friday. In Bridges, students are beginning their final unit for the year. In writing, we are focusing on opinion writing. In health, we have been learning about the human body (heart, lungs, digestive system, brain, and the importance of rest, exercise, dental health) Students have completed science and social studies. We have an enrichment unit where we are going to be learning about animals.  
4. Intermediate Unit:
   • Second: Finishing Unit 5-Opinion texts focusing on the author's purpose of persuading the reader. Math Unit 8 - Marble Mazes and different challenges each day for tube length, marble mass, ramp height etc. Social Studies they are learning about what it means to be a good citizen and the importance of service jobs within the community. Science just finished up the unit on seed dispersal. 
   • Third: In Reading they are on Unit 6 Week 5.  They are enjoying reading poems that go with the essential question - What makes you laugh?  Readers theater starts next week.  In Math they are on unit 7.  Just finished multiplying one digit by two digits using different strategies.  Now coming back to work with fractions. Social Studies they are learning the history of Janesville before the Tallman House field trip on Friday.  In Science the students are working with Mr. Shevy to make a commercial for their products they made to help keep plants safe from frost.
5. Upper unit: 
   • Both 4th and 5th graders have been working hard on the upcoming track meet and everyone is looking forward to the event.  They are focused on being the Most Prepared & the Most Respectful!

Highlights of remaining expenses still pending reviewed along with outstanding SDJ invoices.  A decision to make a donation of $50 to the Washington Elementary PTO to help raise funds for their lost supplies in the flooding as well as a donation to a Harrison family that lost a parent was approved to proceed.

    1. PTO T-Shirt Design.  Waiting for new logos to expand selection. Retro Hawk design approved for giveaway shirt at school year open house. Dr. Grandt will be using a different design for staff shirts based on the new official logo being created by the Donovan Group.
    2. Summer Planning Meeting(s) - PTO group chat to be used to confirm dates and communication throughout the summer. 
       • Create tentative 26-27 event/fundraiser calendar
       • Plan for Teacher Meet & Greets - Thursday, August 20th (8a-7p) 
         1. Board availability
         2. PTO packet hand out
         3. Prize for membership?
         4. Photo booth props?
         5. Food/snacks for staff?
         6. Smencil sales?
       • Plan for Color Run - Thursday, September 24th 5:00-6:30pm. Rain date Thursday Oct 1st. Anticipated end of June or early July meeting for planning.
       • Plan for HNO applications
13. New Business 
    1. Spirit Wear - Working on what inventories sold and potential options to incorporate the new logos for the district and Harrison when completed.  Dr. Grandt point of contact with vendor.
    2. JAC Awards/Meeting - Three Harrison nominees: Erin Stacey for Volunteer of the Year, Kassi Haas for Teacher of the Year and Steve Stacey for Staff Member of the Year. Decision on these at the end of this week early next week. Banquet on the 26th of May.
    3. Craig Walk on Friday - Everyone is looking forward to students returning!
    4. Keeping 3rd Monday and keeping it at Sidelines.   

 

12. Questions/Concerns:
    1. Field Trips (there were some questions last meeting)  Up to 3 buses per grade that PTO supplies funds for.  Field trip listing available and teachers to do a forecasting sheet in the fall. 
    2. Go through PTO cabinets - Need volunteers to work and reorganize. Erin, Deb, Michelle and Allisen volunteered.
